General Rules (e.g. sportsmanship, self-officiated)

USC Policies (e.g. weather)

Detailed Rules: Ultimate Players Association (UPA)11th Edition Official Detailed Rules. Where USC rules conflict with UPA rules (i.e. time of game, point cap), USC rules prevail.

• Score Reporting: Scores must be emailed to info@urbansports.ca within one week of the game, or the match will be considered a forfeit.

• Please arrive 10 minutes early so games start on time.

• Equipment: Players to supply own frisbee (if need one ask USC). USC will provide each team with pylons at the beginning of the season and the team is responsible for bringing to each game. If a team loses pylons they are responsible for replacing. If a team hasn't chosen a team colour, they must not conflict with a team that has chosen a colour and should bring a dark and white t-shirt to each game.

Cleats are allowed but cannot be metal. Sandals are not permitted.

• Field Set-Up: Teams are responsible for setting up the field. Teams must check for and fix any safety hazards (i.e. holes in the ground, removal of water bottles). The field must be located in an area in which there are no safety hazards. If the safety hazard cannot be fixed or avoided, the game must be cancelled and the team must notify Urban Sports Club.

At Lions Park, to turn on lights find the small grey box that is above waist height (same side as bleachers), open it and press the green button.

When setting up the field at least 2 metres must be provided between the field boundary and any obstacles (i.e. bleachers, soccer posts). It works best to use the centre line of the soccer field as the centre of the field and pace the field from there. Both a 5's and 7's field can fit between the sidelines of the soccer field.

5 on 5: The field size is 30 yards wide and 60 yards long with 15 yard end zones. Dimensions are longer than those used in the initial season of 2007.

7 on 7: The field should be 40 yards wide by 70 yards long with 20 yard end zones (may need to reduce end zones to account for space between field and obstacles).

• Team composition: For 7s there must be a minimum of 6 players on the field, and for 5s a minimum of 4 on the field. There must be at least 2 of each gender on the field. If there is a scarcity of females overall, USC may make adjustments to this rule in which all forfeits must be approved by USC.

• Standings, Forfeiting, & Length of Games: For each match 2 points are allocated for a win, 1 for a tie and 0 for a loss. If a team forfeits, provided the team has enough players for a recreational match they will receive 0. If they forfeit but do not have enough to play a match they will receive -1.

• Time Cap (rule subject to change based on field allocaitons): The teams must chose a designated time-keeper. The game is won by the sooner of the first team to reach 15 points or at the end of 90 minutes. The time-keeper must announce 5 and 10 minutes remaining, with the final point played out in full. If after 90 minutes, the score is tied or there is only a difference of 1 point then add 2 points to the highest score and play until the first team reaches that score.

Half-time will occur at the sooner of the first team to reach 8 points or at 40 minutes.

• Time-outs: Teams may call a short one minute time-out in each half, but may not do so in the last 10 minutes of the game. If there is an injury all teams must stop play immediately.

• Beginning of Game: The game will start with the captains using a frisbee flip. Winning team has one of two options: i) receive or throw initial pull, or ii) choose zone they want to defend. The other team gets remaining choice. The second half begins with a reversal of the initial choices.

• Initiate Play: Each point begins with both teams lining up on their end zone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. The receiving team (offense) has the option of catching the disc or letting it fall. If they try to catch the disc and drop it, it is returned to the other team. Players must play the disc from where it lands, unless it lands in the end zone in which it is played from the goal line. If the pull initially lands in-bounds, but rolls out-of-bounds before touched by the receiving team, the disc is put into play at the spot on the field nearest to where the disc last crossed the perimeter of the field. If the disc goes out of bounds follow UPA Rules.

• Movement of the Disc: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc (thrower) has 10 seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower (marker) counts out the stall count.

• Change of Possession: When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. Foot blocks are not allowed in the recreational league.

• Scoring: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's end zone, the offense scores a point.

• Substitutes: Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during injury timeout.

• Non-contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made. When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.

• Self-Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes. Since we operate at 3 different fields (some with only one match) it is not practical to hire conveners. If serious disputes arise please inform USC and we will consider solutions such as spirit points.

• Spirit of the Game: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play. For the recreational level there may be players playing for the first time, please be patient and explain any rules (it may be that they didn't realize something was a fault). Please resolve any disputes by calmly talking to your opponent as opposed to verbally attacking them...this goes a long way towards creating an enjoyable playing environment.

• Foot Blocks: Footblocks are not allowed.

ALL RULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE DURING THE SEASON. RULES MAY BE ADDED OR CHANGED TO KEEP THE GAME AS FUN AND FAIR AS POSSIBLE. IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR THERE IS A NEED FOR CLARIFICATION, PLEASE CONTACT US.
