General Rules (e.g. sportsmanship, self-officiated)
USC Policies (e.g. weather)
Duration, Matches and Score Reporting
Playing time is generally 60 minutes. Player assistance is required to set up equipment when there is a double gym to maximize playing time. USC requires 5 minutes at the end of the night to take down equipment.
The team winning the rally scores a point (Rally Point System).
During the regular season, teams may play as many games as time permits provided the game goes to 25; however, the format is best-of-3-games. Therefore, only 3 games will count for scores and standings. In order for the 3rd game to count, a team must have a minimum of 15 points for the game to be deemed a win. If more than 3 games are played, those games will be considered fun matches. USC may extend playing time by 5 minutes to let a game finish. Teams are allotted 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 for a loss. If they forfeit, provided the team has enough players for a recreational match (i.e. 4 of any gender) they will receive 0. If they do not have enough to play a match they will receive -1 for a forfeit.
New Fall 2009: If there is a tie in match points, the winner will first be determined by which team won when they played each other in a league game. If there is still a tie, game win ratio will be used.
If a Game Coordinator is not present, the winning team is responsible for emailing the score to info@urbansports.ca.
The Team and Forfeiting
6 players compete on a side with at least 2 of each gender. If a team does not have 6 players, they may play with 4 players provided there is at least 2 of each gender. The opposing team may waive the minimum requirements and count it as an official game, but this must be made prior to the start of the match. The convener should also be notified so there are no issues after the match.
Teams will forfeit 1 game for every 10 minutes past the designated start time that they do not have a team. If there are not enough players to form a team by 15 minutes all games are forfeited. Teams may pick up players during the regular season to field a team, provided they sign the waiver. A player must have played in at least 5 games with a team to participate with that team in the playoffs. Any team that forfeits 1 or more matches without approval from USC may be ineligible for playoffs and may be ejected from the league without a refund.
Playing the Game
Games are played to 25 points. A team must win by 2 points, with a cap of 27. If time is running out a convener may decide to cap the game.
Hawthorne, Bruce Trail and Guardian Angels special rules: At schools where there isn't much space to serve (i.e. Hawthorne, Bruce Trail, Guardian Angels) players may go over the serving line with one foot. The outline of the court is the blue line. It is short of regulation by a few feet. Players may chose to use the yellow line or back wall for more playing space if both teams agree.
A player may touch but not completely cross over the center line with his/her foot. Crossing over the net could cause injuries should you collide with a player. This is an injury that is preventable and careless players cause a major safety risk to other players and themselves.
Ankle braclets should be worn to prevent ankle injuries.
Captains or a designate on the team must bring a first aid kit for their team including cold packs. Teams are responsible for reporting any safety hazards to USC.
The first game will start with a rally for serve. The winning team serves. For all subsequent games, the alternate team, that did not serve first in the prior game, will serve.
The ball may touch any part of the body including the feet.
The ball on a serve or any other play may touch the net.
Maximum of 5 serves per player in a row.
A block does not count as one of the allowable hits.
The serve may not be blocked or spiked or double fisted by the opposing side on the first hit.
No part of the body may touch the net. This will be considered a fault.
Hard hitting is not permitted in the Rec Division and is not encouraged in the Intermediate Division.
Players may reach over the top of the net only on the follow-through for a spike or block. A player may not touch the ball when it is in the opponents court (defined by the plane of the net) until after the third hit. Contact of the ball when spiking is legal only if a portion of the ball is in contact with the plane of the net or on the spiker's side of the net. Spikers may follow through over the net after legal contact. When spiking from the back-row, for take off feet must be behind the attack line. You may land in the front zone.
Lifting/carrying of the ball is prohibited. The ball must be cleanly hit when spiking with an open hand. Guiding or carrying is illegal. ALL CO-ED VOLLEYBALL RULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE DURING THE SEASON. URBAN SPORTS CLUB MAY CHANGE OR ADD RULES TO KEEP THE GAME AS FUN AND FAIR AS POSSIBLE.
