SPORTSMANSHIP, AGGRESSION & RULES
REMEMBER THIS IS A FUN LEAGUE - PLAY FAIR & HAVE FUN
IT'S NOT THE WORLD CUP, AGGRESSIVE PLAY AGAINST YOUR OPPONENT IS NOT WORTH THE PRIZE OF $75 AT NED DEVINE'S
USC has received complaints about players playing too aggressively and constantly arguing the rules. Players are concerned that the recreational aspect of the league has diminished.
As most players have been in the league for awhile USC is disappointed to hear that some teams are not getting along. We would hope that you would not want to hurt your opponent and that you will treat each other with respect.
If there are any issues you should feel comfortable enough to call a time-out and talk to your opponent. If this still doesn't help then talk to the convener.
SUGGESTIONS FOR REDUCING DISPUTES
1. Before the game starts each the captains should agree on (arrive early so it doesn't interfere with game time):
- What obstacles are considered out
- Crease Area (protection area for the goalie)
- Goal Area (where goalie can handle the ball)
2. With soccer there will always be incidental contact, e.g., two players going after the ball. However, there is no need for aggressive charging or holding onto your opponent. It's not fun and no one wants go to work with bruises or broken bones. If you charge into someone, apologize.
2. Know the rules and make sure any new players know them.
3. Handball is usually not a fault (if in doubt do not call it): This is the most understood rule in soccer. The official FIFA rules are that the ball must be 'handled deliberately.' Note the words 'handled' (the words touch or handball are not used in the rules) and 'deliberately' (must be intentional), make it rare for a ball contacting a hand to be a fault. In indoor soccer where the gym is small and the ball bounces around a lot, the ball is constantly hitting players in the hand through no fault of the player. Think about it, why should you be penalized if someone kicks the ball and it hits your hand. If you call handball every time the ball hits someone's hand you won't get much playing time as you'll be constantly stopping.
4. Take a half-time break even in the 60 minute games to calm down. This tends to reduce aggressive play.
5. Call your own faults so as not to aggravate the other team. |
