Duration, Scoring, Score Reporting and Equipment
Please arrive at least 5 minutes early. If you start late because you are late you do not get extra time and your time will be reduced.
Equipment and Court Set-Up: USC recommends protective equipment such as shin guards and mouth guards. Captains or a designate on the team must bring a first aid kit for their team including cold packs. Teams are responsible for setting up the court including benches and the soccer net. Teams must report any safety hazards to the convener.
Standings: During the regular season, teams are allotted 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 for a loss. If teams do not play an even number of games win percentage will be used. If a team forfeits, provided the team has enough players for a recreational match (i.e. 4 of any gender) they will receive 0. If they do not have enough to play a match they will receive -1. For games in which a team won due to forfeit, the game score will calculated as an average of the season.
Score Reporting: Scores must be emailed to info@urbansports.ca. Please report any errors to info@urbansports.ca.
Playoffs: Consist of two halves with a break. Playoff games with a tie will be broken as follows:
i) For games with at least 90 minutes playing time, a 10-minute overtime period during the finals match in which the first goal to scores wins. If there is only 60 minutes of playing time there will be no overtime and the game will go strait to a shoot-out five minutes before the end of playing time.
ii) Shoot-out if above does not result in a winner: 3 players from each team get to take a penalty shot. One of the shooters from each team must be female. After 3 rounds, the team with the most goals wins. If tied, each team alternates shooters until tie is broken per pair of shooters.
Sportsmanship: USC reserves the right to cancel a game if players are not conducting themselves in a sportsmanlike manor. Any fights or physical violence may result in the immediate cancellation of a game, in which one or both teams forfeit.
The Team, Forfeiting, Adding Players to the Team
6 players including goalie will compete with a minimum of 2 of each gender (one of the females may play goalie). If a team does not have 6 players, they may play with a minimum of 4 players provided there is at least 1 of each gender (but the one female cannot play goalie). A player must have played in at least 5 games with a team to participate with that team in the playoffs. Any team that forfeits 1 or more matches without approval from USC may be ineligible for playoffs and may be ejected from the league without a refund.
Playing the Game
Please resolve any disputes by calling a timeout and calmly talking to your opponent as opposed to verbally attacking them...this goes a long way towards creating an enjoyable playing environment. If this doesn't work talk to the convener.
Body contact: Due to the nature of the sport there will be some incidental contact (i.e. 2 players going after the ball). However, where a person is being over aggressive or intentionally contacting someone this is a fault.
Calling infractions: Players must call their own infractions. If there is a disagreement call a timeout, talk to the other team and get the convener if needed.
Start of Game: The game will start with captains using rock, paper, scissors. The winning team will have the kick-off.
Kick-off: A kick off will start the game, restart the game after a goal is scored and start the second half of the game. A goal cannot be scored from a kick off. The ball may not be touched by the kicker twice in a row. Teams will switch after half-time.
Substitutions: Regular players may substitute “on the fly.” Goalies must wait for a stop in play or call time-out.
Out of Bounds: If the ball leaves the playing area it is out. A player from the opposing team will get the ball and kick it back into the playing area; a goal cannot be scored from a kick in. All walls are part of the playing area.
High Ball Height Restriction: The ball is a dead ball if it hits the ceiling, basketball net or clock etc…(obstacles in the playing area). To restart play, the team that did not hit the ceiling receives an indirect kick. Teams should agree on what obstacles are considered out before starting the game.
Handball: Since it is a small playing area, handballs are often unavoidable and unintentional. A handball must be deliberate to be considered a fault and as a result is usually not a fault. For example, if someone kicks the ball and it hits your hand through no fault of your own it is not a fault. If you catch the ball or intentionally redirect the ball with your hand this is a fault.
Sliding, High Kicking: High kicking, sliding or anything similar are prohibited.
Indirect Kicks (you cannot score off an indirect kick): When a team commits a fault the opposing team is awarded an indirect kick. For example if a team is physically aggressive, deliberately handles the ball or the goalie picks up the ball after a pass back.
Offside: There are no offsides.
Goalies' Crease: Players of either team are not allowed to enter a goalie's crease. This is for the safety of the goalie. A goal scored from the crease will not count. The crease is the area which is about 3 feet in front of the goal and is typically marked by the first thick line in front of the net. It is not the same area as where the goalie can handle the ball.
Goalie Other: The goalie can only handle the ball in the goal box. At least one foot must remains in the goal box. Teams must agree on the goal area before the start of the game. Goalies cannot score a goal. Sliding is not allowed by any players including the goalie. Goalies cannot drop kick a ball.
Goal: A goal is scored when the ball completely crosses the goal frame. You cannot score by shooting the ball from your half. This will help reduce "ball blasting". A ball cannot be propelled by hand or arm by a player of the attacking side; this will not count as a goal.
Passing the ball back to the goalie: If a player directs the ball back to their own goalie, the goalie cannot pick the ball up with their hands.
ALL RULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE DURING THE SEASON. RULES MAY BE ADDED OR CHANGED TO KEEP THE GAME AS FUN AND FAIR AS POSSIBLE. IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR THERE IS A NEED FOR CLARIFICATION, PLEASE CONTACT US.
