REMINDERS
There is no intentional body contact permitted ... at all.
Although high sticking can be an issue, injuries can result from other situations such as playing with the head down resulting in a collision with a stick, or charging someone when they have the ball. Please keep your head up and play defensively (similar to avoiding collisions when driving). Another cause has been lifting players sticks, which than hit someone in the face. As stated in the rules, do not lift other player's sticks.
You must call your own infractions and if a player does not call their own infraction, then other players should do so. This is the best way for a player to learn, by calling their own misconducts. Saying “sorry” works. It is not the responsibility of the convener to call infractions.
Promote fun and safety throughout the game. For example, yell “goalie's ball” to prevent goalie-hacking and yell “high sticking” (and stop the play) when it occurs. |

Duration, Matches and Score Reporting
Please arrive 5 minutes early so games start on time.
Duration of Matches: Generally 55 minutes, including 5 minutes of warm-up. There will be a 5-minute break at halftime. Team captains may agree to skip the break, in which USC will only call a mandatory break if the game gets too aggressive.
Scoring: During the regular season, teams are allotted 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 for a loss. If a team forfeits, provided the team has enough players for a recreational match they will receive 0. If they do not have enough to play a recreational match they will receive -1in the standings. For games in which a team won due to forfeit, the game score will be 10-0 for the team that won.
Playoff games with a tie will be broken as follows (usually consists of 2-35 minute halves):
i) 10-minute overtime period, first goal to scores wins.
ii) Shoot-out if above does not result in a winner: 3 players from each team get to take a penalty shot. One of the shooters from each team must be female. After 3 rounds, the team with the most goals wins. If tied, each team alternates shooters until tie is broken per pair of shooters.
Equitable seeding will be used to determine a team's playoff position.
Scores can be reported to Patrick after the game. If he is not present please email score to info@urbansports.ca.
The Team and Forfeiting
Players on the court and forfeiting: During the game 5 players including the goalie compete for each team with a min. of 1 woman (ultimately depends on amount of women signed up). If a team does not have 5 players, they may play with 4 provided there is 1 female. Each side will have 5 minutes past the game's designated start time to form a team. If these requirements cannot be met and if the opposing team will not agree on an alternate player arrangement, then that team will forfeit. All reasonable alternatives should be considered to avoid a forfeit particularly with regard to female players.
Teams may pick up players during the regular season to field a team or borrow players from another team if necessary; they should have at least 4 players of their regular team on the court at all times. A player must have played in at least 5 games with a given team to participate in the playoffs.
Any team that forfeits 1 or more matches without approval from USC may be ineligible for playoffs and may be ejected from the league without a refund.
Equipment
Captains or a designate on the team are responsible for bringing a first aid kit for their team including cold packs. Teams must report any safety hazards to the convener.
USC will supply player and goalie sticks. Players may provide their own stick if the same as ones used by USC, which are DOM 70 (these sticks may be purchased from USC if they are in stock). Players may wear protective gear limited to mouth guards and eyewear, any other equipment must be approved by USC. Forward and defense players may not wear shoulder pads, shin pads, hockey gloves or a helmet.
Goalies are not allowed to wear attire that would make them have a larger presence in net (e.g. hockey pants), unless approved by USC. Goalies absolutely must wear a goalie mask when ball is in play. USC recommends a baseball glove/goalie trapper, blocker and street hockey pads (maximum 30” by 9” wide), unless otherwise approved by USC.
Playing the Game
Sportsmanship: Urban Sports Club expects good sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play. There may be on occasion a player that doesn't realize they are doing something (i.e. high sticking the ball), please bring any violations to their attention. Please resolve any disputes by calmly talking to your opponent as opposed to verbally attacking them...this goes a long way towards creating an enjoyable playing environment.
Face-off: Used to begin each period. Players must square up on a face-off and cannot use bodies to lean in and gain advantage. The three-tap face-off method (i.e. face-off players tap their sticks, tap again, tap again, then play) will be used.
Honesty: A player and/or anyone on their team, is expected to call their own violations. The player should apologize to their opponent and step aside from play.
Body Contact: Due to the nature of the sport there will be some incidental contact (i.e. 2 players going after the ball). However, where a person is being over aggressive or intentionally contacting someone this is fault. For example, charging, hip checking, and elbowing your opponents are all fouls.
Offside will only apply to face-offs.
There will be no icing.
The following actions are prohibited:
- body checking and using your backside to advance
- slashing
- high sticking, defined to be the raising of your stick blade higher than your waist
- hacking of the goalie when they have or are trying to get the ball
- impeding an opponent's play by hooking over their stick
- lifting your opponents stick when they have the ball, are in the vicinity of the ball or are receiving a pass
- deliberate contact
A hand may be used to knock down or touch an airborne ball; a player may not use their hand to pass the ball.
A ball that touches the wall is still in play. If the ball leaves the playing area (e.g. through an open door) or enters a team's bench areas, it is out. A player from the team that did not last touch the ball gets possession. If the ball hits the ceiling, players must not raise their sticks high in the air to get the ball.
A goalie may catch the ball in their glove. Anytime a goalie falls on the ball or traps it on the floor with his glove the play will result in the goalie returning to their crease unimpeded, and clearing of the ball by the goalie. When clearing the ball, the goalie must keep their stick below waist height. If the goalie uses their stick to clear the ball then it is playable anywhere it goes. If a goalie throws it past the center a player from his/her team cannot touch the ball first, otherwise it will result in a face off at the location of the infraction.
Players of either team, or their sticks, are not allowed to enter a goalie's crease. The crease is the area 3 feet in front of the goal line and as wide as the net.
For the safety of the goaltender, he/she should not attempt to smother the ball beyond their crease. Goalies may only go 5 feet in any direction beyond their crease, and are not allowed behind their net.
A goal is scored when the ball crosses the goal line between the 2 posts. Goals may be scored from anywhere on the floor. Goals will not count if the stick blade last contacting the ball was above the waist level, if the ball was kicked in, or if a hand (other than the goalie's ) batted the ball in.
After a goal is scored the ball begins behind the net of the team that was scored on. The team that just scored cannot cross the centre line until a member of the team who has the ball has crossed the center line. At least one pass must be attempted over the center line before a team can score.
ALL FLOOR HOCKEY RULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE DURING THE SEASON. RULES MAY BE ADDED OR CHANGED TO KEEP THE GAME AS FUN AND FAIR AS POSSIBLE. IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR THERE IS A NEED FOR CLARIFICATION, PLEASE CONTACT US.
