Duration, Matches and Score Reporting

•  Games will be between 8.30pm and 10.30pm on Mondays and 6.30pm and 10.30pm on Wednesdays. Matches are 60 minutes in length.

•  The team winning the rally scores a point (Rally Point System).

•  Each game is played to 25 points. Each game must be won by at least 2 points.

• During the regular season, teams may play as many games as time permits provided the game goes to 25; however, the format is best-of-3-games. Therefore, only 3 games will count for scores and standings. In order for the 3rd game to count, a team must have a minimum of 15 points for the game to be deemed a win. If more than 3 games are played, those games will be considered fun matches. USC may extend playing time by 5 minutes to let a game finish. Teams are allotted 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 for a loss. If they forfeit, provided the team has enough players for a recreational match (i.e. 4 of any gender) they will receive 0. If they do not have enough to play a match they will receive -1 for a forfeit.

•  Teams are to keep track of how many games they win and how many games they lose. The winning team is responsible for giving their score to the USC Game Coordinator prior to leaving the Courts.

The Team & Forfeiting

•   6 on 6 Co-ed: 6 players compete on a side with at least 2 of each gender. If a team does not have 6 players, they may play with 4 players provided there is at least 2 of each gender. The opposing team may waive the minimum requirements and count it as an official game, but this must be made prior to the start of the match.

•  Teams will forfeit 1 game for every 10 minutes past the designated start time that they do not have a team. If there are not enough players by 15 minutes all games are forfeited. Teams may pick up players during the regular season to field a team, provided they sign the waiver. A player must have played in at least 5 games with a team to participate with that team in the playoffs. Any team that forfeits 1 or more matches without approval from USC may be ineligible for playoffs and may be ejected from the league without a refund.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL SPECIFIC WEATHER GUIDELINES

It can be very difficult to reschedule games! Don't call games without good reason. Be prepared to play through some poor weather!

The cancellation of Beach games is left to the discretion of the Volleyball Game Coordinator that is on site (with input from the team captains).

  • We will not cancel games until one of our field staff has visited the court to assess the conditions. In beach volleyball, the sand does not become slippery when it’s wet so games are usually played in wet weather.

  • If the start of game 1 is delayed or if there is a stoppage of play during a game, teams are expected to wait at least 20 minutes for weather to pass.

  • A minimum of 1 complete game must be played for a match to be considered official.

  • If the teams are in the middle of game two or three in their match when time is called, the team leading will win the game. There must be a minimum of five total points played for the game to count.

Playing the Game

•  A player may touch but not completely cross over the center line with his/her foot. This is an injury that is preventable and careless players cause a major safety risk to other players and themselves.

•  Captains or a designate on the team must bring a first aid kit for their team including cold packs. Teams are responsible for reporting any safety hazards to USC.

•  The first game will start with a rally for serve. The winning team serves. For all subsequent games, the alternate team, that did not serve first in the prior game, will serve.

•  The ball may touch any part of the body including the feet.

•  The ball on a serve or any other play may touch the net.

•  Maximum of 5 serves per player in a row.

•  A block does not count as one of the allowable hits.

•  The serve may not be blocked or spiked or double fisted by the opposing side on the first hit.

•  No part of the body may touch the net. This will be considered a fault.

•  Players may reach over the top of the net only on the follow-through for a spike or block. A player may not touch the ball when it is in the opponents court (defined by the plane of the net) until after the third hit. Contact of the ball when spiking is legal only if a portion of the ball is in contact with the plane of the net or on the spiker's side of the net. Spikers may follow through over the net after legal contact. When spiking from the back-row, for take off feet must be behind the attack line. You may land in the front zone.

•  Lifting/carrying of the ball is prohibited. The ball must be cleanly hit when spiking with an open hand. Guiding or carrying is illegal.

ALL CO-ED VOLLEYBALL RULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE DURING THE SEASON. URBAN SPORTS CLUB MAY CHANGE OR ADD RULES TO KEEP THE GAME AS FUN AND FAIR AS POSSIBLE. IF YOU HAVE SUGGESTIONS OR IF THERE IS A NEED FOR CLARIFICATION, PLEASE CONTACT US.
