Beginner level players who sign up to play at the competitive level will be removed from that level without a refund (unless there is a spot at a lower level or if we are able to find a replacement).
For the Wednesday night league only, teams will be divided into divisions based on their skill level. A ladder system will be used in which stronger teams move up and weaker teams move down to ensure more even matches and seeding.
PLEASE NOTE: USC will have the right to remove players and teams from a skill level without a refund if they do not register at a level to match their skill (unless there is a spot at a lower level or if we are able to find a replacement).
Notes and definitions about skill levels:
- Recreational Level: If you are a beginner, please let us know and we will place you in the recreational division. This level is for new players or teams with new players. Little bumping and setting. Teams will try for 3 hits. No hard hitting allowed. Team Goal: Get it over the net - it doesn't matter how!
- Intermediate Level: Players and teams at this level have a mixed skill level. Plays consist of at least two hits; three hits is the goal with decent serving, bumping and volleying. The ball is usually set by the middle player. Expect to see some hitting and blocking, although hard hitting is not encouraged, and you will typically not see strong or organized attacks. At this level, the team may have a few weaker players and may not be able to return difficult serves or spikes. If at least three of your players have played high school volleyball you should be signing up for the Intermediate Plus or Competitive Level. Team Goal: try to have 3 hits on every play.
- Intermediate Plus: The majority of your players should be able to pass with accuracy; otherwise you should register for intermediate or recreational. This level will see 3 hits attempted each possession with the start of organized attacks and hard hitting. Team Goal: Get it over the net in an organized 3 hit strategy. If that falls through, place it well in the other court.
- Competitive Level: Players at this level are skilled and experienced players and have a solid understanding of the rules and advanced strategies of the game. Players are experienced with most having played at the senior high school or varsity level. Teams must consistently conduct 3 hits, serve and return serve, have a reliable setter, have strong hitters, and players who are able to block. This level will see a large amount of hard hitting, organized attacks, and strategic serving.
The above divisions are created based on skill level and not on competitive behaviour. All USC players are expected to play with a ‘fun-first, winning second’ attitude. For the Wednesday night league, USC may move your team up or down a division based on seasonal results.
